The Philippine art scene is, without a doubt, alive and flourishing. Case in point: León Gallery just sold one of Mark Nicdao’s works for P1.8 million. Titled “Wormhole of My Cognitive Estrangement,” the mixed media art refers to the artist’s passions in science fiction, time travel, and the relentless pursuit of beauty. Lisa Nakpil, the curator of the show, told us, “I regard it as a tour de force by the Juan Luna of Philippine photographers. Mark combines ferocious technical skills with a fierce imagination.”

The exhibition, called In the Near Distance, received  a tremendous reception from the collectors, according to Lisa. Alongside Mark’s masterpiece, on display was Leeroy New’s “Grotto : Life,” Olivia d’Aboville’s “I See Trees,” Enzo Razon’s untitled work from his Karaoke Series, Henri Lamy’s “The Myth of Faith,” and Ian Anderson’s “PeepShow.”

Léon Gallery said in a statement that they are honored to give Filipino young artists a platform for their works. Jaime Ponce de Leon, director of León Gallery, added, “It is interesting to note that the common denominator of the artists exhibited is having lived abroad hence a cross-cultural perspective enabling them a well-rounded perspective in honing such unique talents. Certainly world-class!”

Cheers to Leon Gallery and to all the artists!
