Harry Potter fans have been theorizing for a while now that Lord Voldemort’s trusted snake, Nagini would soon make an appearance in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Their queries were finally answered when the final trailer came out last night and showed actress Claudia Kim transforming into the fearsome snake.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the prequel will show Nagini’s humble beginnings as a woman performing at the Circus Arcanus. Claudia told the publication that we can expect a new side of the villain. “You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character,” she said.
But how did Nagini permanently turn into a snake—the one that killed several people, including Severus Snape. Claudia alluded, “She does feel sometimes it’s not controllable. She is bound to [permanently] transform at some point to a beast so she feels this pressure that the clock is ticking.”
Pottermore explains that Nagini is a “Maledictus,” a being that carries a blood curse that destines them to transform into a beast in due time. The question now is how Lord Voldemort fits into this picture.
There are theories suggesting that the Fantastic Beasts movies is going to be a Voldemort origin story. The introduction of Gellert Grindelwald (played by Johnny Depp, ugh) is pointing to that because he was killed by Voldemort. Pottermore also pointed out that Nagini and Voldemort developed a “special relationship”—don’t think of anything gross—since the latter can speak to snakes. Perhaps Nagini, which Claudia described as an outcast and her only friend in the circus is Credence Barebone (played by Ezra Miller), eventually found solace in the Dark Lord.
We won’t know for certain if that’s how the story will go. There are still three more Fantastic Beasts movies coming up so these Nagini theories might just stay as theories. (Or will they?) But please, don’t make any weird Nagini the snake and Voldemort fan fiction while waiting.[Entertainment Weekly]
