‘Gossip Girl’ reboot will feature a more diverse cast

Back in July, HBO Max announced a “Gossip Girl” reboot after its six-season run on The CW network ended last 2012. According to Variety, the series will focus on “how much social media and the social landscape itself has changed in the intervening years.” The series will have original creators Joshua Schwartz and Stephanie Savage produce the show, alongside Joshua Safran, another OG “Gossip Girl” producer who will write the show’s revival.

What to expect for this upcoming reboot? Safran revealed that the cast will be more diverse. “There was not a lot of representation the first time around on the show,” he said. “Even when I went to private school in New York in the ‘90s, the school didn’t necessarily reflect what was on ‘Gossip Girl.’ So, this time around the leads are nonwhite.”

Safran also shared that in the original run, he was the only gay writer and added that there was a lack of queer representation. But now, the reboot is “very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that,” he said.

It’s also been confirmed that Kristen Bell will reprise her role as the omniscient narrator. “Kristen Bell has always been and will always be the voice of “Gossip Girl,” Schwartz and Savage said in a statement.

While there’s no official premiere date yet, the reboot is confirmed to be set at Constance Billard School.

There might be no chance that the original cast will return, but the fact that they’re making the show more inclusive makes me feel excited.
