The Met Gala 2020 theme is time: What to (hopefully) expect

Next year’s Met Gala is going to capitalize on timeless fashion—literally. The theme is titled “About Time: Fashion and Duration,” which is apt for the 150th anniversary of the prestigious event. According to The Cut, the 2020 exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will feature approximately 160 pieces spanning from 1870 to present day.

The theme encourages attendees to look at different periods in time for fashion inspiration. Curator Andrew Bolton said the exhibit won’t feature a linear history and will offer “new and unexpected juxtapositions.” He also told Vogue that he was inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel (the author is this year’s “ghost narrator”) and Sally Potter’s 1992 film adaptation “Orlando.” One scene that caught Bolton’s attention was Tilda Swinton entering a maze “in an 18th-century woman’s robe à la française, and as she runs through it, her clothes change to mid-19th-century dress, and she reemerges in 1850s England.”

Compared to previous themes, Met Gala 2020 is expected to be more expansive in terms of styles. The internet already has a few guesses and expectations for the red carpet, including celebrities who will potentially get on the best dressed list. Here’s a quick rundown.
