As we continue in our studies of how to develop your personal brand, we’ve talked about the different ways stars build on their celebrity status. One way is through beauty lines. There are also different collaborations but also merchandise is involved. But don’t mistake these for the usual fan paraphernalia you get after a concert or online in a few specialty websites. Today’s celebrities like to create clothing lines that not only represent who they are but also follow through with how their brand is a lifestyle.
Let’s examine a few of these said lines and how they reflect on the celebrities’ beliefs and life experiences.
What started out as collabs with different clothing shops like Topshop and Ever New, the Jenner sisters went ahead to claim a clothing line under their famous names. Their collections boast of different tops, jackets, bodysuits, along with bags and accessories. Building the brand hasn’t been without hiccups, though. Their release of shirts which featured different music icons superimposed with their selfies was met with criticism and accusations of cultural appropriation.
This year, the lovable Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson launched a line of clothing for curvy girls just like her. She shared with InStyle of how earlier experiences drove her to create a line for women size 14 and up,“I was a young woman making money, and there were no clothes to buy “It felt like if you were over a certain size, designers didn’t care about you.”
Similar to Rebel, Khloe Kardashian’s denim line caters to women of all sizes. Since its launch, the line expanded into bodysuits, shorts, skirts, and jackets. You can order them online or look for them in select stores across the United States and in the United Kingdom.
In 2006, these twins founded The Row, to share their chic taste to the world. Named after London’s Savile Row, the line served as a precursor to their other brand Elizabeth and James. Growth for the brand has been smooth. In 2012, they were nominated in the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award. Last year, The Row opened its first New York brick-and-mortar branch.
I bet there is a generation out there who doesn’t know Victoria Beckham as Posh Spice. They know her primarily because of her designer line which has become an anticipated presentation for Fashion Week. From sporting wild outfits in the ’90s, Victoria is now a style peg when it comes to sensible clothing that proves to be both timeless and trendy.
It might surprise some of you how Justin Timberlake is also into designing. With his childhood friend Trace Ayala, he created William Rast in 2005 to create a clothing line that’s described as a mix of “Tennessee meets Hollywood, Rat-Pack meets James Dean.”
