Lea Salonga Will Play a Goddess of Love in New Broadway Show

Lea Salonga announced that she’s coming back to the Broadway stage for the revival of Once on This Island.

According to Playbill, Lea will play Erzulie, the Jewel of the Antilles’ Goddess of Love. She’ll be joined by Glee’s Alex Newell, Greenleaf’s Merle Dandridge, and Cats’ Earl Darrington.

“In casting the Gods that inhabit our island, it became imperative for me to break expectations and stretch beyond the bounds in which Gods are traditionally represented. It felt important that young people watching our production see themselves reflected back from the stage at them,” said director Michael Arden.

The play follows the story of peasant girl Ti Moune, who falls in love with a wealthy boy. She then seeks help from the four Island Gods to discover her life’s purpose.

Lea’s last Broadway show was Allegiance, which staged its last show on Valentine’s Day last year. So if you’re ever in New York on Dec. 3 onwards, be sure to catch Once on This Island at the Circle in the Square Theatre.
